The photographic gesture
This time, in addition to his Leica SL3 Max wanted to shoot a roll of medium-format film with his Mamiya RZ67, again in black and white.
This is the first time I’ve done a behind-the-scenes feature on someone shooting in medium format, and I have to say that, aesthetically speaking, it really makes an impression.
It is as if the camera itself elevates the photographer by drawing on the image that many of us have of photography. Although the SL3 is a Leica, it draws on a very mainstream photographer’s aesthetic and doesn’t make quite the same impression.
The car
One of the things I like most about the backstage side of things is having an excuse to include in the shot everything that shouldn’t be there. A tripod, the assistant, the generator, the lights – it all enhances the set and makes it even more interesting.
Of course, I’m going to take the opportunity to snap a few photos – after all, we all do it.
What I’d like to incorporate into my style is a blend of the posed and the spontaneous, and to achieve this I need a model who understands when the moment is right.
In this case, Alice was spot on.
